Belles Beat, Then Treat Heat...

Posted by Paul Koehler on Jun 19 2005 at 05:00PM PDT
The Sellersville Belles played host to the Arctic Heat from Eagle River, Alaska in a single game on Thursday night, June 16th at B. Earl Druckenmiller Park. It was a great evening of quality softball and fellowship for these players from opposite ends of the United States. The Belles won the game 6-4. Pitching was shared by all four Belles pitchers - Erin Degnan, Beth Everist, Emilie Dudek, and Renee Korb. The Belles showed a potent offense scoring 2 runs in the first inning, 3 runs in the 2nd, and a single run in the 3rd. The Heat battled back but it was too little too late. The Belles offense was lead by Kim Smeltzer(2 for 3, RBI), Meredith Bostock(2 for 2), and Beth Everist who was also 2 for 2, 2 RBI, with a single and a solo home run in the Belles half of the 3rd inning. Renne Korb and Laura Tobias also had hits for the Belles. The Belles defense was rock solid as they turned two double plays in the 7 innings of work. The first double play came in the 2nd, with a runner at 1st. The Heat put down a sacrifice bunt, Allie Davies threw to Cait Mulroy at first for the out and Cait fired to Erin Degnan covering third who tug the runner trying to go from first to third on the bunt. Then in the 6th, LeeAnn Kramer speared a line drive at short and threw to Everist at first for the double play. After the game, the Belles treated the Heat to cheese steaks, hoagies, soft pretzels, water ice, a gift bag of various "PA items," and a commemorative t-shirt of the event donated by Bux-Mont Awards and Engraving of Sellersville. The players exchanged email addresses and hope to continue a long distance friendship that was started under "the lights at Druckenmiller." "Everyone had a great time," beamed head coach Paul Koehler. "This is another example of what can happen on an athletic field. Friendships were start that may last for a long time. I told our players, you will quickly forget what you did in the game, but you will never forget the game you played against a team from Alaska!"image
