Belles Survive Pennsbury...

Posted by Paul Koehler on Jun 20 2004 at 05:00PM PDT
Yes, the young Sellersville Belles can now say about the "Pennsbury Annual Art Coleman Showcse Tournament," "been there, done that." Once the Belles shook of the nerves about playing in the biggest college showcase in the Northeast, with 71 other teams from all over the United States(Alaska included), they played some gutsy battlin' Belles softball. The locals went 2-3 in their bracket, winning games with the Midway Orange Crush and the Morris County Belles. Pitchers Erin Degnan and Emilie Dudek both notched victories. The Belles defense played mostly with heart as they worked through injuries and ailments, moving players around to get through. The offense was lead by Melissa Gates. Gates hit .500 on the weekend, going 6 for 12 at the plate with 2 RBI. The highlight of the weekend was in the bottom of the 6th inning, with the Belles leading the Crush 4-2, Missy launched a solo homerun over the centerfield fence for the first Belles "round triper" of the 2004 season!! Jill Long also was 3 for 6 in the 2 games she played and LeeAnn Kramer hit .363 for the weekend. "This was a great weekend for our girls for two reasons. First, we got 5 games in in the weekend; and second, all 5 games were against quality teams. This type of tournament challenges players to pick up their game. We have several young players who will benefit greatly from this experience," said Belles Head Coach Paul Koehler. More on each game can be read on the individual game articles.image
